Where they’re strong: free, global, and often broader than the paywalled indexes, with especially good coverage of non-English and Global South research. Where to watch: less curation means metadata quality varies, so verify high-stakes records.
The essentials: OpenAlex (the open replacement for Scopus/WoS), Europe PMC and PubMed for biomedicine, DOAJ for vetted OA journals, CORE and BASE for full-text aggregation, arXiv and the preprint servers for the frontier, and Unpaywall to reach free copies.
