Perplexity
An answer engine with footnotes — fast orientation, not a citable source.
At a Glance

- Perplexity AI
- Coverage
Live web search plus an academic-source filter that narrows retrieval toward journal and preprint content, and a Deep Research mode that runs multi-step searches into a longer report. Coverage is whatever the open web and its indexing partners expose, not a curated bibliographic index (verify current model and source options).
- Access
Freemium — a free tier with limited advanced searches per day; Pro subscription for higher limits, model choice, and deeper research runs.
- Free alternative
- Consensus, Semantic Scholar, Ai2 Asta, or Google Scholar for anything you intend to cite.
- Regional
Global, with stronger coverage of English-language and openly accessible content.
Our Take
Perplexity earned its place in researchers’ workflows by making sourced answers the default — every claim carries a footnote, which is a meaningful improvement over unattributed chatbot output. But it indexes the web, not a bibliographic database, so its academic mode is a filter rather than a controlled vocabulary, and paywalled literature is systematically under-represented. Treat it as the fastest way to orient yourself in an unfamiliar area, then move to a real index before you build a reference list on it.
Power Tips
- Switch to the academic source filter before any literature question, or you’ll get blog posts ranked alongside papers.
- Open every footnote — the citation sometimes supports a weaker claim than the sentence it’s attached to.
- Use Deep Research for a first landscape sketch, then rerun the same question in Scopus or Web of Science for defensible coverage.
