Our Take
Asta is the most credible free answer to the paid AI search tools, and it comes from the non-profit that already built Semantic Scholar, so the corpus underneath it is a known quantity rather than a black box. Its Paper Finder lineage is genuinely good at the hard case — finding papers you can describe but cannot name — and the fact that Ai2 publishes its own benchmarks invites the scrutiny most vendors avoid. Coverage still reflects open metadata, so paywalled and non-English work is thinner than in Scopus or Web of Science; use it as your free first pass and a check on whatever your institution licenses.
Power Tips
- Describe the paper you’re hunting for in a full sentence rather than keywords — Paper Finder was built for exactly that.
- Use it as a free cross-check against Scopus AI or the Web of Science assistant to see what a licensed index is missing.
- Developers can hit the Asta resources and API directly rather than scraping the web interface.
