FutureHouse Platform
Named agents for literature Q&A, deep synthesis and prior-work detection.
At a Glance
- Publisher
- FutureHouse (non-profit); Kosmos commercialized via Edison Scientific
- Coverage
A suite of specialised research agents rather than a database — Crow for literature Q&A with citations, Falcon for deep synthesis, Owl for prior-work detection, Finch for data analysis, Phoenix for chemistry, and Robin for end-to-end discovery. The Kosmos autonomous research agent, which chains literature and data-analysis agents across long runs, has been spun out to Edison Scientific (verify which agents are currently free and which are commercial).
- Access
Freemium — platform agents have free access tiers with API availability; Kosmos and lab-oriented products are commercial through Edison Scientific.
- Free alternative
- Ai2 Asta for the literature-agent use case; Elicit for structured extraction.
- Regional
Global, with a life-sciences and chemistry centre of gravity.
Our Take
FutureHouse is the most serious attempt yet at agents that do research rather than just retrieve it, and the specialisation is the interesting part — Owl’s ‘has anyone already done this?’ check answers a question every researcher asks and no search box handles well. Published accuracy claims for the autonomous Kosmos agent sit around 80% by the developers’ own evaluation, which is remarkable for the task and nowhere near good enough to accept unverified. Treat these agents as a hypothesis-generation and prior-art layer, read the reasoning traces rather than the conclusions, and note that the commercial split to Edison Scientific means the free/paid line here is likely to keep moving.
Power Tips
- Owl is the underrated one — run it before committing to a project to check the idea isn’t already published.
- Read the agent’s trace, not just its answer; that’s where you catch a misread paper.
- Free-tier limits and which agents are open change fast — check before planning a workflow around them.
