Semantic Scholar pairs OpenAlex-scale openness with AI features that genuinely save time — TLDR one-line summaries, “highly influential” citation flagging that separates substantive citations from passing mentions, and the Semantic Reader for in-context reading. For triage and discovery it’s excellent, and the open API and bulk datasets make it a favourite for building research tools. As with any broad automated crawl, metadata quality varies and the AI summaries are aids, not substitutes for reading the methods. Use it for fast triage, influence-weighted citation discovery, and as a free data backbone; verify specifics against the source paper.
