Our Take

J-STAGE is where a large share of Japanese research lives openly online, and it’s underused outside Japan mostly because people don’t know it’s there. Many journals offer English-language metadata or full text, which makes it more accessible to non-Japanese researchers than most regional indexes, and it’s free. Coverage skews toward Japanese society journals, and quality and English availability vary title to title. If your topic has a strong Japanese research base — materials science, robotics, certain areas of medicine — search J-STAGE directly rather than assuming the commercial indexes captured it.

Power Tips

  • Search J-STAGE directly for fields with deep Japanese research; filter for English full text where you don’t read Japanese
  • cross-reference a J-STAGE article against OpenAlex or Dimensions to pick up a DOI and English citation handle.
