Our Take

Where many indexes give you metadata and a link, CORE gives you the full text — it’s the largest aggregation of open-access full-text papers anywhere, which makes it the backbone for text and data mining, machine-learning training sets, and any workflow that needs actual documents at scale rather than abstracts. The API and bulk datasets are genuinely useful and well-documented. As a broad repository harvester, metadata consistency varies and it’s OA-only by nature. Use it when you need full text in volume or a free, mineable corpus; pair it with a curated index when you need selectivity or citation metrics.

Power Tips

  • Use CORE’s API or bulk datasets when a project needs open-access full text at scale — literature mining, systematic-review text analysis, or model training
  • dedupe CORE harvests carefully (one record can arrive from several repositories) before counting, the same way you would across databases (Issue 3).
