Our Take
CNKI is the indispensable gateway to Chinese scholarship — for many subjects it is the only comprehensive route to China’s journal articles, theses, and grey literature, which the Western databases index thinly, so for any work touching Chinese research it is hard to avoid. Its scale is enormous. The trade-offs are significant: it is expensive, the interface and most content are in Chinese, its market dominance has drawn regulatory and pricing scrutiny, and access outside China can be uneven. Use it as your essential index for Chinese-language research; expect to work in Chinese, and budget for the subscription.
