Our Take
PitchBook is the reference database for private capital — if your question is about a startup’s funding history, a fund’s portfolio, a PE deal, or a valuation, it’s the most complete single source, with better depth than Crunchbase and a strong analyst layer. The trade-offs are price (enterprise-only) and the usual private-market caveat: valuations and financials are often estimated or reported, not audited. For research, the fund and investor profiles and the deal comps are the standouts. Use it for private-market and VC/PE research; flag estimated valuations as such.
Power Tips
- Trace a company’s full funding and cap-table history rather than piecing it together from press.
- Use investor and fund profiles to map who backs whom for sourcing or diligence.
- Label estimated valuations clearly — many PitchBook figures are modelled.
