Our Take
The preprint server that proved open science works, and still the front line in physics, mathematics, and computer science — where the arXiv version is often the version of record long before any journal. The value is speed and openness; the cost is that moderation checks topicality and scholarly form, not correctness, so an arXiv paper is a claim, not a verified finding. For machine-scale work, the API and S3 bulk access are excellent. Use it to track the research frontier and to grab full text freely; tier your confidence and verify before citing as established.
Power Tips
- Subscribe to arXiv email/RSS alerts for a category or search to catch new submissions the day they post.
- Use the API or S3 bulk access for large-scale text and metadata harvesting.
- In econ and quant finance, cross-check arXiv (econ, q-fin) against SSRN, since communities split across the two.
