Our Take

Crunchbase is the most accessible startup and funding database — its free tier alone answers a lot of quick questions (who founded it, who funded it, how much), and Pro adds real search and exports. Compared with PitchBook it’s shallower and its data, being partly community-sourced, is patchier, but it’s a fraction of the cost and often good enough for journalism, BD, and early diligence. Use it for fast startup and funding lookups and light landscaping; step up to PitchBook or Capital IQ when you need depth and reliability for a deal.

Power Tips

  • Use the free tier for quick funding and founder lookups before paying for anything.
  • In Pro, save searches and set alerts to monitor a sector or a competitor’s raises.
  • Cross-check community-sourced figures against the company’s own announcements.
