Our Take
figshare is a slick, widely-adopted repository for research data and outputs, popular with institutions and publishers who use it to host supplementary materials. Its viewer and metadata are more polished than most, and DOIs make everything citable. As a Digital Science product it sits in the same family as Dimensions. Versus the nonprofit Zenodo the trade-off is ownership and the freemium model, though public deposits remain free. Use it for sharing and citing datasets and figures, especially where a journal or institution already uses it; weigh Zenodo if you prefer a nonprofit home.
Power Tips
- Use it to host supplementary data for a paper when the publisher partners with figshare.
- Grab the DOI for every dataset so it’s independently citable.
- Consider Zenodo if nonprofit stewardship matters for long-term preservation.
