Our Take
Mendeley is a capable free reference manager with good PDF handling and a browser importer, backed by Elsevier’s ecosystem and a large discovery catalogue. For many researchers it does the job. But the honest comparison is with Zotero: Zotero is open source and nonprofit where Mendeley is Elsevier-owned, and Mendeley’s past changes — the desktop rewrite, storage limits — have frustrated long-time users. Choose Mendeley if you are embedded in Elsevier’s tools or your lab standardises on it; for most individuals Zotero is the better default. Whatever you pick, keep clean import settings for auditable reviews.
