Our Take
NotebookLM’s whole value is the constraint: because it refuses to answer from outside your uploaded sources, its citations point at real passages you can click and check, which makes it far safer for literature work than an open-web chatbot. It is a synthesis tool, not a discovery tool — it will not find papers you haven’t already collected, so it sits at the end of your workflow rather than the start. Use it to interrogate a reading pile you assembled elsewhere, and remember that grounding reduces fabrication without eliminating misreading.

- Build one notebook per research question rather than one giant notebook — retrieval quality drops as unrelated sources accumulate.
- Ask it to build a comparison table across your uploaded papers, then click each citation to confirm the extraction.
- Paste your own draft in as a source and ask which claims lack support in the rest of the corpus.
