Our Take

Nobody beats Scholar on reach. It indexes grey literature, non-English work, and obscure regional journals the curated databases skip, and the “Cited by” trail is one click from any result. That same indiscriminate crawl is the catch: no quality filter, predatory journals sit beside flagship titles, metrics are inflated by self-citation and duplicates, advanced search is thin, and there’s no bulk export. Use it to find everything and to chase citations fast; never use it as your only source for a systematic review or an impact claim.

Power Tips

  • Lean on “Cited by” and “Related articles” to walk a citation trail quickly
  • set up Scholar Alerts on a query or an author to catch new work as it’s indexed
  • save to your Library, then export individual records to Zotero rather than trusting Scholar’s metrics; pair with a curated index (Scopus, WoS) when the count has to be defensible.
