Our Take
SSRN is where a great deal of economics, finance, and law research appears months or years before journal publication, which makes it indispensable for staying current in those fields — and for practitioners, the download ranking is a genuine signal of what the field is actually reading. The trade-offs: it’s a repository, not a curated index, so quality varies and papers can be revised or pulled at a publisher’s request; and Elsevier ownership plus the download gate mean it isn’t fully open in the way an institutional repository is. Use it for the practitioner-relevant frontier in social sciences; verify claims against the published version once it exists.
