Our Take
InCites is the Web of Science counterpart to SciVal — the analytics environment for benchmarking research performance, with field-normalized indicators (like Category Normalized Citation Impact) that are widely used in evaluation and rankings. It’s rigorous within WoS’s curated corpus, and it inherits that corpus’s selectivity and English/STEM tilt. It’s premium. Use it for normalized bibliometric benchmarking where you rely on Web of Science; pair with SciVal or an open tool to test sensitivity to database choice.
Power Tips
- Use InCites’ field-normalized metrics (e.g. CNCI) for fairer cross-field comparison than raw counts, mindful of WoS’s coverage selectivity
- run the same question in SciVal or OpenAlex to see how much the answer depends on the underlying database.
