Our Take

SciVal is the analytics layer on top of Scopus — the tool research offices use to benchmark institutions, map collaborations, spot emerging topics, and support strategy and funding cases. Its value is turning Scopus’s raw records into decision-ready metrics. The caveats are that it inherits Scopus’s coverage biases (lighter on humanities, non-English, and Global South work) and it’s a premium product. Use it for institutional benchmarking and research-strategy analysis where you have Scopus; read its metrics with the coverage caveats in mind.

Power Tips

  • Use SciVal for institutional benchmarking and topic-prominence scans, but remember it inherits Scopus’s under-coverage of humanities and non-English work
  • triangulate a strategic conclusion with an OpenAlex-based analysis to check for coverage bias.
