Our Take
Dryad’s differentiator is curation — unlike the catch-all repositories, every data package goes through a review step and is released CC0, which makes its data more reliably reusable, especially in the life and environmental sciences where it’s strongest and often journal-integrated. The trade-off is a deposit fee and a narrower disciplinary center of gravity. Use it when you want (or a journal requires) curated, cleanly licensed research data; Zenodo and Figshare are the free, uncurated alternatives.
Power Tips
- Deposit in Dryad when a journal mandates curated data sharing or when reusability matters — the curation and CC0 licensing pay off downstream
- prefer Dryad-curated datasets for reuse when data quality is critical, over uncurated general repositories.
